Security doesn’t just mean building things right- it means updating EVERY time.
WordPress is powerful. It powers about 30% of ALL sites on the internet.
There are all kind of tools (aka plugins) that are built using this WordPress core as the base.
Because this core software is so widely used, and freely available, there are hackers trying to get ahead of the game and access those files.
“But why would someone want to hack my site about fairy houses that I’ve seen in my travels?”
Hackers can do a lot with backdoor access to your server, they can use it to pull credit card numbers off of another site, sell illicit drugs off of dark-web sites, log keystrokes, download malicious software onto users computers, etc. Imagine that a stranger gets into your spare bedroom and sets up a meth lab without your knowledge. That’s how bad it can get.
To make it more complicated, the world of wordpress moves fast. Between December 2018 and January 2019 there were 3 releases of wordpress and php 7.0.1 was released.
Monthly reports detailing the activity of users on their site are very valuable to stay alert to possible threats. One site showed a lot of hits from Russia and referrals from weird urls like “bestsox.com”.
When referral traffic is from odd or parked sites, it’s not a good sign. Often times in an effort to increase their ranking on Google, site owners will imbed all kinds of links just for the score boost. This can reflect poorly on your site though. It incriminates your site by association!
Another type of link your SEO can suffer from is toxic “site-wide” links. If you are referring to something- you would include a link to a specific page like THIS article on bad and toxic links. It’s a red flag if links go just to a sites’ homepage. If a page has a high ranking, this kind of a link would help you, but otherwise it will drag down your site’s score.
What? I don’t just have to update WordPress itself? What is php?
WordPress is the framework that holds the information that your site displays and a handy back – end interface where you can easily manage it all. This should be updated immediately when a new version is released.
Mini-programs (similar to API’s) that add functionality to your WordPress content. Think WooCommerce (Handles: stock, purchases and online payment). These are another thing that should be updated immediately.
php is the LANGUAGE that many of the functions of WordPress are constructed in. Php updates should only be performed by a professional (and backups should be created before updates are run.)
